Free The Kids (Theo’s Work inc.) is a wonderful organization that was founded by Father Marc to help orphaned and vulnerable children in Haiti. His orphanage situated in Southern Haiti was set up to care for young children and teenage boys from the streets, however since the earth quake there has been an ever growing population of girls who have found a new home at ‘Hope Village’.
“ At Free The Kids/Espwa we have seen significant suffering as well. As many of you know, before the earthquake, we had 650 children in our care at Pwoje Espwa Sud in Les Cayes, Haiti. We now have just over 800. Our food, housing, clothing, sanitation, and schools are stretched to their limit. Many of our children are sleeping 4 to a bed.”
With the success of our last drive, I know we will be able to provide a little extra comfort to these children.
Dee Orlowski, West Region Director for Free The Kids, has asked if we can provide their younger children with 132 dolls. All extra dolls will be given out to those children that are admitted after the start date of this drive and to the younger ones that attend the school and vocational training classes (over 1,100 children) in Hope Village from the poor surrounding neighborhoods.
Completed! Well Done Everyone!!!
Remember boy dolls can wear Hawaiian shirts (flower/girly print fabric scraps!)! Soccer is a huge sport in Haiti, why not appliquĂ© a number to the back of a doll’s shirt and put a pair of shorts on him? (click here for a great free boy shorts pattern) He’ll be ready to hit the soccer pitch with his new best friend in no time!

Wonderful! A new project to get started on.
YAY!!! I can't wait to get started!!!!!
BTW blogged about this, trying to help get the word out!!
I cant wait to start..i have so many ideas...
I love the idea of sending more dolls to Haiti but the deadline of November seems so far away. The children need our love now!!!! What's the reason for the delay in sending the dolls? Keep up the good work! Blessings to all!!!
Dear Gail,
Although Haiti is not front page news any more the county’s structure is still in turmoil. Due to political unrest, and strict customs procedures, many shipments of vital aid, such as medical supplies, are trapped in customs. Due to this, it is very difficult to find an organization willing to fight to get the doll shipments through. Most have very limited space for essential items such as food, shelter, medicine. My worst fear is that everyone takes the time and love to make the dolls and then they don’t make it to the children. That is why I make every effort to find reputable organizations that have the means, infrastructure and networks to allow our dolls to successfully reach the children.
I cannot tell you how grateful I am to Free The Kids for giving us this opportunity to help comfort a child in need.
Thank you so much for taking part in the drive, Happy Sewing!
Sarah
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to help. I'll be working on a doll or two. Blessings to all.
Hi, Sarah!
I blogged about this new drive on my site: http://paperdali.blogspot.com/2010/05/sewing-for-charity-new-doll-drive.html
November sounds far, but if that's what it is, that's what it is. I welcome the extra time to get some sewing done! November will be here before we know it ....
Peace, blessings, and thanks for helping us crafty gals unite for a good cause.
I just found out about this and am so excited to participate! I'm trying to get the word out and get some of my friends involved too. I'm glad there's a bit of time before the deadline, so I can make more dolls and get my friends to do the same.
Thanks so much Amanda! So glad you could join us!
Take care & Happy Sewing!
Count me in!!!!! Thanks once again for giving us the opportunity to help. It can be depressing sometimes, turning on the radio and hearing about all the sadness in the world and not be in a position to do a lot to make it better. At least, sitting at our sewing tables, we can know that we are doing something to help and to show these poor people that the world isn't totally heartless and that there is still a lot of love there. Thanks for that. Pippa xxx
I'm looking forward to making some more dollies - I'll blog about it again to help spread the word:)
Thanks so much Claire! Any forums you can help me with again too would be fab!
Happy Sewing!
So much fun! I got my first group of dolls finished today and will definitely be making more this summer. I've been sharing my progress with my friends on Facebook and mentioning it on forums I frequent (swapmamas, somethingawful, craftforum), so hopefully we can get even more people involved.
Fabulous News! Thanks so much Amanda, if there’s any way you could send me some photos of your finished dolls, I’d love to share them with the DD community!
Thanks so much for helping to spread the word, Happy Sewing!

Hello Sarah,
I will definitely be participating in this doll request for the Free The Kids organization :D
I would like to know, would you be interested in other orphanages that would love the dolls, such as in Ethiopia and Peru?
Hi Eve, that’s wonderful, and yes I am always interested in other orphanages around the world!
This is such a wonderful idea! I actually wanted to do something like this when the Haiti quake first took place but I didn't know how to go about making it a reality.

Thank you for your kind comment on my blog. I'm so happy to have "met" you online. I would love to participate in this activity. I will get started on some dolls to help out too.
