Haiti: What will happen to the Orphans?

Friday, January 15, 2010

CNN reports that God's Littlest Angels Orphanage director, Dixie Bickel, in Haiti stated that, foreign governments should urgently accept Haitian orphans on humanitarian grounds following this week's devastating earthquake.

Emergency visas and passports could help push through adoptions that were stalled after the quake, and would open up beds for children who lost their parents in the disaster.

‘Paperwork for adoptions that were under way when the earthquake hit Tuesday night may now be buried in the rubble of collapsed buildings and lost, said Bickel, whose orphanage cares for 152 children, including 84 babies.’

British citizen Chris Skelton, who arrived in Haiti hours before the earthquake hit to sign paperwork as part of the adoption process, wrote a public letter urging foreign help.

"I cannot express the sheer magnitude of the plight that the children of this country have faced, one which will now spiral downwards further with devastating results," Skelton wrote in the letter. "The situation is dire -- there will be many more children in need of help, and GLA and other orphanages cannot cope with the increased need."

Haiti: I'm still in shock

I am still in shock over the absolute mass destruction of Haiti ….. In 2006, a report published by the Haiti government stated there were 200 registered orphanages, but they estimated the really the number of facilities was more likely to be double that. It’s 2010 …. A catastrophic distaste .. I can’t imagine how many children must be alone afraid ….

Once I am up and running with Dolly Donations I am going to contact the Red Cross to discuss how I can get the dolls to the children once some form of order is established….

All I can think is …. They need Water, Food & Shelter ... right now ….. Comfort & Love will be next ….

I have added a Red Cross Button to my blog. The Red Cross assures that 100% of the money raised is going to disaster relief efforts in Haiti.

Drawing Dolly

Thursday, January 14, 2010

I was up late last night after putting my little one to bed sketching Dolly ideas. She of cause is not only my inspiration but will be my genie piggy for trying out my prototypes dolls!

I have two main Dolly Donation patterns in mind, both would have a boy and a girl Dolly version to make…

The first is a very simple Dolly design so that even someone who doesn’t sew could make it. Something easy that you could make with your children.

The second is for those who sew a bit (or a lot!) a basic rag doll, something quick & easy to make, uses up left over material and looks adorable …

I want them both to be fun, to hold my (and your) interest, and inspire me to make another and another and another!!! Hahaha!!!!!  And of course, I want the children to just LOVE THEM!!

All Dolly Donation patterns will be free to download and for personal use only. The only thing I ask is …… if you make one for yourself, please consider making one for a child who doesn’t have a Dolly.

Have a Pillow Case? Make a Dress!

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

My wonderful sister-in-law sent me to the site ‘Little dresses for Africa’

I love it. What a worthy cause!

Here is the link to their easy-peasy Pillow Case Dress.

They also accept ‘Britches for boys’. Any simple ‘small size’ style is accepted with an elastic waist.

Not much out there in free child short patterns, but I did find this fab tutorial (with a video too!) to make pants at Rookie Moms from a t-shirt, looks so much simpler than I imagined!! Just make them shorter, so they are not too hot.

I love their quote:    "We’re not just sending dresses, we’re sending HOPE!"

Ok I am off to look through my cupboards for pillow cases and t-shirts!!

Happy Sewing!

Everybody Deserves a Dolly!

My favorite dolly was a rag doll named Holly Hobby. I lost her on the train back from London (I’m originally from the UK) with my mother when I was 5. My mother called the station and before she knew it, Holly was on the next train back to us with a band aid (plaster) on her knee and a cute note from the staff. I was so happy to see her again, and glad that she would be feeling better now she was safely back with me after her adventure.

The wonderful thing about a Dolly is it lets a child’s imagination flow, whether they are a little boy or a little girl. With a dolly by their side, they are never lonely, they have someone to talk to, to hug and hold tight, and of course to play with!

Think how important your favorite dolly, stuffed toy, or blanky was to you ….. doesn’t it bring a lovely warm smile to your lips when you picture it ……… come on, I know it does!!!
Watching my daughter play, and remembering how important the comfort of a toy was, I have decided to embark on an exciting journey of crafting creation! Making Dollies for Donation!

I will be providing links to free doll patterns and uploading some fun free patterns of my own for others out there that want to join in the fun of making a Dolly for a child who would otherwise have nothing to call their own.
